Risk Factors for Developing Osteoporosis
01.
Age
Bone mass typically peaks at age 30 and begins to slow its resilience as we age.
02.
Gender
Women are over 3 times more likely than men to develop osteoporosis due to the sharp decline of estrogen after menopause.
03.
History of breast or prostate cancer
Testosterone or estrogen reducing treatments for prostate or breast cancer can accelerate bone breakdown.
04.
Small body frame
Having a smaller stature may mean experiencing symptoms quicker because there is less bone mass to lose.
05.
Thyroid Disease-Hyperthyroidism
Thyroid hormone levels that stay too high for too long create an increased risk for developing low bone density and osteoporosis.
06.
Diabetes
People who have diabetes have worse bone quality and increased risk of fracture compared to individuals living without a metabolic disorder.

Literature suggests that less than 5% of patients at risk for osteoporotic fractures of the spine and hip are diagnosed and treated.
